Fall Fashion Must-Haves 2009

My husband came home from work a few days ago to find me sitting on our couch with a pile of fashion magazines in my lap and a pen in my mouth. "All in a day's work, Honey!" I said with a smile ~ Oh how I love my job! We've spent countless hours researching and cross-examining the runway reports, fashion chronicles, online write-ups, and more to bring you the absolute must-have cannot-live-without-it fashion tips for this season. And so I give you the Fall Fashion Report: June Cleaver meets Madonna, sophisticatedly-edgy, Gothically-glam, leather, feathers, and velvet... It's not a circus - it's fall 2009...

1. The Little Black Jacket: this season the little black jacket is being hailed as "the answer to every fashion question." Cropped and fitted or over-sized and masculine, top any outfit from a little dress to jeans and a t-shirt with a LBJ and be on your way! Tuxedo, biker, military, or lady-like... velvet, wool, or embellished... so many to choose from!

2. Pants: Jeans are taking a back-seat this season to cotton or leather trousers, but the boyfriend look is still the way to go when you decide to rock your denim. Ankles are this season's bare-skin. Roll loose-fit jeans above your ankle and give yourself some length with some hello-stiletto statement heels. Like to show off your gams? You're in luck! Sequined shorts are hot enough to keep you warm in the new season. Want some coverage? Leather leggings strutted down many-a-runway during fashion season.

3. Skirts: Classic cuts and lines in vivid, can't-look-away colors dominate the skirt collections of this season. If A-lines and pencil cuts aren't for you, don't fret! Super short, super full skirts are just as noteworthy for fall.

4. Tops: While jackets were a main focus in the top-department, what goes under them is just as important! From worn-out T-shirts to frilly, girly blouses, this category is the most versatile for this season. The best part: mix and match the style and dressiness of your tops with your other pieces: a hand-me-down-T with a velvet blazer and patent heels goes just as well as a silk, puff-sleeve blouse with slouchy, ripped-up, loose-fit jeans. Rebels rejoice-- boundaries are so last year.

5. Dresses: perhaps the most understated piece of the current wardrobe, sheath dresses and draped frocks are the two most sought-after styles: think 50's style silhouette... and then pair it with impossibly high heels or lace up biker boots and welcome to the season! For those of you who can't part with your total-glam party dress - don't! 80's prom re-done is right at home with the current trend.

6. Colors: Black is back! Black, white, black & white, navy, gray, yellows, reds, nudes, and purples are the front-runners of this season's color pallet. Stripes, sequins, houndstooth, embellishments, studs, plaid, patches, candy-colored-footwear, and animal print also play important parts of many a fall-trend. Think somber, foggy-morning-in-London main pieces accented with traffic-stopping, bold, bright accessories.

7. Accessories: Perhaps my favorite part of the season! quilted clutches, gloves, leggings, and knee-high socks are only the beginning of this fall's accent pieces. Sky-high heels, cut-away booties, metal and metallic detailing, biker boots, riding boots, patent leather, fringe, and animal print... can you see why I'm so excited? The switch-up this season: bare your ankles, not your knees! Thigh-high boots and shorter boots with thigh-high, peek-a-boo, bright, colorful socks are commonplace this season. Sadly to say, nary a flat was in sight... unless, of course, it was a boot.

To re-cap: fall is nothing if not everything. So have fun and take some risks - no one will see the outfits that didn't do what you thought they would (my husband calls them "outfit-carcasses.")

Hope to see you soon!!

Best Week Ever!

The short version:
This past week was the best week... ever!

So what makes for the best week ever? Most importantly, summer clearance is officially underway! At 1/2 off the lowest price our summer inventory is flying out of our door. Proof: we had the longest receipt ever printed in Boutique History: 63 items in one purchase... check out the picture, the receipt is almost as tall as me!

We also received the most Couture drop off we've ever checked in. 60 pieces of Chanel, Hugo Boss, Akris, Prada, Armani, Tory Burch, and Ralph Lauren. The adrenaline rush left Julia and I wiped out -- and I have bruises on my arm from my several attempts to make sure I wasn't dreaming, and I'm happy to report that while this new merchandise is a dream come true, it was no dream!

And then a miracle happened: brand spankin' new Christian Louboutin black patent leather booties IN MY SIZE. I wear a 10, so my fellow size 9+ ladies understand the rareness of the situation. The good news: I'm not talented enough to walk in shoes higher than a one-inch heel, so the (most perfect pair of shoes ever) are still here and waiting for their Cinderella. Confession: I did wear them around Boutique for a few minutes... can you blame me?
All the experts advise ending any kind of information with a "kick," so here's a few last-minute notes about a few of my favorite pieces that we've checked in during the last 7 days: a BEAUTIFUL Gucci Bullet Handbag, Chanel leather gloves, a full-length Chanel coat with swing-detailing on the hem, a black Prada handbag, and, my personal favorite: an Escada Couture blue beaded gown. Here's to the next 7 days.... I've got a great feeling about this season! This fall is all about fun, color, and a little bit of rock-n-roll...

See you soon!

Just to give you a heads up, you're really going to want to read to the end of this newsletter...

Designer of the Week: Jackie Rogers
"I don't believe in fashion, I believe in style."

Jackie Rogers learned the fashion industry from the inside out, beginning her path "ripping" (model slang for: she's got a killer runway strut) runways in Rome. And then she met Coco Chanel, which changed her life forever. Chanel contracted her for a year as a model, and at the end of that year insisted that Jackie Rogers remain with her. Jackie agreed under the provision that she would be able to work creatively on the collection. Chanel mentored Rogers in her style and techniques of design. Both Rogers and Chanel insist upon the importance of the fabric itself, and neither designer ever sketched their designs, but instead molded and contoured the fabric until a shape emerged. Jackie Rogers favors fabrics with texture, and states that she "takes away, rather than adds," valuing simplicity in her designs.

This week's fashion tip: Layers!
This shouldn't come as a shock to any of you that I'm pushing the idea of layering your clothing, but in our current economy every piece in your wardrobe needs to work for you as year-round as possible. For fall, a sundress becomes a bright layer over a solid button-down blouse (add boots for an extra fall touch... ooh... and maybe a scarf too!) Jewel tone tanks breathe life and style into dark blazers, blouses, and sweaters. Double up your cardigans or add a cardigan between your camisole and blazer. In short: go play dress-up in your closet and just take a chance.... see what the possibilities are! You might just surprise yourself.

Designer of the Week: Elsa Peretti
"According to Tiffany's vice-president, Frank Arcaro, Elsa Peretti is: 'the most complicated person I know. She's volatile, explosive, obstinate, and as difficult as any artist trying to achieve perfection'." Born in 1940 in Florence, Italy, Peretti went on to model and study interior design at the Volbicela School in Rome. She explained in an interview with the AJC how her very successful career in jewelry design began: "In 1969, I found a tiny flower vase in a junk shop and was inspired to design a bottle on a chain for designer Giorgio di Sant'Angelo." Peretti moved to New York in the 1960's and began designing for several top designers including Tiffany, Halston, and Oscar de la Renta. She was awarded the honor of Accessories Designer of the Year by the Council of Fashion Designers in 1996. She is known for designs that are both timeless and simple including her intricate mesh-work with and the famous heart necklace for Tiffany & Co.

Fashion Tip of the Week: Think Bright!
The little black dress has met its match. Meet it's competitor that is anything-but-black. InStyle magazine calls it "the little bright dress!" What's YOUR color - the color you know you feel your best in? Find a dress that brings life and light to your features--and the best part: minimal accessorizing required! My favorite feature: the little bright dress can work year-round in your wardrobe! Be easy-breezy in the summer with simple stappy shoes, and pair it with a fitted blazer, tights, and boots for a chic look this fall and winter.

New and Newsworthy! Julia checked out a new salon and had to share the great news: You have GOT to check this place out!

Thank you to Wendy Hamilton for the best cut and color I have experienced in my fourteen years of living in Atlanta! I am a busy, busy mother of two and my morning at Liberty was a wonderful break from my hectic days. Wendy suggested a flattering new cut and guided me toward a great palette of dimensional highlights. Her expertise and artistry are complemented by her wonderful, kind personality. Her attention to me as a client was a delight. Liberty is just a short drive down Ponce de Leon. See http://www.wendydoeshair.com/ or call 404-889-0714. Ask her about a 20% discount for new clients!
Thank you, Wendy!

*Notes from Casey's Desk*
For starters, my desk is a mess! We're about to end our spring/summer consignment season and begin accepting fall and winter. (Consignors: Saturday is the last day for summer drop-offs.) The season-change for merchandise is always a fun, hectic time of the year, and my desk is suffering!
A big thank-you to everyone who came out for the Luau and dress-sale! We had a blast and we sold a TON of dresses -- 86, to be exact! We actually sold 245 pieces during our 2 day event! And just when I was worried we'd be empty, I got a phone call from a consignor who buys samples from Style Shows and brings them to me. He says: "I have 150 pieces of new summer samples, can I bring them?" Umm... yes!
I can't wait for the fall season to start! I love warm weather, but I really love layering my clothing, as most of you have probably noticed by now. We will begin accepting fall merchandise on Tuesday, July 28th and I'll be like a kid on Christmas morning! Last but not least: will someone please come buy this fabulous yellow Lucky leather handbag so I don't have to? I can only resist temptation for so long.... We hope to see you soon!
